Am I Eligible for SSI?

Serving You From Our Offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, Fayetteville and Durham by Getting to Know You. We Serve the Injured and Disabled Throughout North Carolina. We Are Prepared to Fight for the Benefits and Compensation That You Need and Deserve.

Am I eligible for SSI? This is a common question for our Charlotte North Carolina supplemental security income attorney. Frankly, there are many SSDI and SSI myths that mislead people about eligibility for these benefits. Our North Carolina supplemental security income lawyer has experience with these issues. We understand the factors involved in eligibility, so can help you determine whether your petition for benefits will be accepted.

Most people looking for Supplemental Security Income are in desperate need of the benefits. If you are in this situation, wouldn't you rather work with a local attorney who will take the time to get to know you? The big, out-of-state New York firms do not care about their clients in this way. At The Law Offices of Paul M. Goodson, P.C., we help you by getting to know you, your legal needs and goals. We will help you get the benefits you need.

Basics of SSI Eligibility

Some of the most essential requirements for eligibility:

  • Disability: SSI, like SSD, requires that all recipients be disabled, meaning that they are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA). In other words, it doesn't matter that you can no longer do the job you used to do. If you can do any job, you are not considered disabled.
  • Income maximum: SSI is essentially a welfare program, intended for people earning very little income, which is why there are strict income limitations for eligibility. A single person cannot have assets in excess of $2,000 per month, and a married couple cannot have more than $3,000 per month, counting both spouses' incomes.
  • Exclusions: You can exclude one car and other items of personal property in SSI.
  • No work requirement: Unlike SSD, which requires a certain amount of work in the months prior to collecting benefits, SSI has no similar requirement.
